description
Part of the Holyhead Maritime museum's complex is a Second World War shelter. The shelter one of sixteen built at the commencement of the war, as part of the towns defences. The reason for the location on the waterfront was due to the fact that the German Luftwaffe flew up the Irish Sea on their bombing raids on Liverpool and Birkenhead. Returning from their forte they would discharge any remaining ordinance on the British and Dutch vessels in the towns harbour. The shelter now houses the permanent exhibition Holyhead at War On display are artefact donated by the town’s people whos relatives fought in the 1st 2nd World Wars and also the Falklands war.
