Coed Y Felin

description

It may be small, but this reserve is one for all seasons. This special patch of ancient woodland and limestone grassland hangs on the slopes above the old mining village of Hendre. In the summer it fills the senses with the colours and scents of wildflowers, the buzzing of insects and, perhaps, the taste of your picnic as you settle to watch the birds darting past in their mad, summer feeding frenzy like the pied flycatcher. In autumn the reserve wraps you up in the glorious russet tones of the turning leaves of Oak, Birch and Sweet Chestnut. It fills your nose with the earthy smells of fungi and nibbled nuts and seeds collected by creatures stocking up for winter. The reserve opens up to the skies in winter; a walk now will refresh your sinuses and your psyche. The trees, bare of their leaves, brings a cool light to the under storey. It's easier to see the woodland creatures which venture out for a quick forage like Redpoll in search for Alder seeds. This light is vital for the bluebells that cover the floor in the spring. Spring is the time to come here early and hear the dawn chorus of woodland birds showing off to attract their mates. You can go in search of strings of toad spawn in the Afon Chwiler or seek out decaying beech stumps for the rare Bird's-nest orchid. There is even a trail of "rock" art to discover, which tells a story of the site's past and present activities.

Grid Ref: SJ 192 677. The reserve is situated four miles north west of Mold at Hendre, on the A541. There is a small car park at the western end with disabled access along the old railway line and a larger car park at the eastern end.
